FAQs

How much validity do I need on my British passport when travelling?

You need to have at least 6 months’ validity on your passport if you plan on travelling soon. MyBritishPassport recommends having 6 months longer on your passport than your stay in the foreign country, as well as at least 3 blank pages.

Failure to comply with the above could result in your being denied boarding or entry into the foreign country.

It is never a good idea to travel on a passport where the expiry date is uncomfortably close to your travel dates. This is something that airlines and travel agents often do not mention and is worth noting.

What are the criteria for British passport photos?

Passport photos are now submitted electronically only so you won’t need to have physical photos printed.

MyBritishPassport can advise you on British passport specifications: simply send us an email or contact us here.

To apply or renew your UK passport, you need 2 identical passport photos. These can be either digital or physical, paper photos, depending on how you are applying.

Your physical photos need to comply to certain specifications. Firstly, they must measure 45mm high and 35mm wide, and should not be a cropped version of a bigger photo.

Since your British passport photo is a close-up of your head and shoulders, your facial image (from the top of your head down to your chin) must measure between 29mm and 34mm high and the photo should be done professionally and printed on white photo paper without a border.

British passport photos should always be clear, crisp and in focus. Black and white photos are not acceptable and your photos should not have any creases, folds or tears.

In addition, the photo background should be either light grey or a plain cream colour in order to give a clear contrast.

Your photos should also not have any markings on either side (unless they need to be countersigned) and must not be edited by photographic software at all.

Make sure that there are no other people, reflections or objects in the picture and that your eyes do not come out red in the photo.

When posing for your passport photo, ensure that you are facing slightly forwards and that you gaze directly into the camera. Avoid smiling and aim for a neutral facial expression, with a closed mouth and your eyes completely open.

Your photo will be rejected if you have hair covering your eyes, you are wearing a hat or there are shadows on your face. Sunglasses are not allowed but you are permitted to wear regular spectacles (but pay attention that there is no reflection or glare).
