FAQs

How much validity do I need on my British passport when travelling?

Your UK passport often needs to be valid for at least 6 months after the return date of your overseas trip (depending on where you are traveling to).

If you do not comply with the above, you may run the risk of being denied boarding on your departure date or may be denied entry into a foreign country upon arrival.

If the expiration date is uncomfortably close to the cut-off date, make sure that you renew it well ahead of time.

The above information is very important and something airlines rarely mention.

Use our handy passport validity calculator to find out whether your passport is valid for your next trip.

How can I renew my expired UK passport?

Your UK passport can be renewed at any time, whether it’s expired or has just run out of pages. To do so, start the application form here. If there is time left on your British passport, it will not be added to your new British passport.

Photos need to be submitted electronically as the photos need to be digital. Printed photos are no longer accepted. Your dedicated MyBritishPassport consultant will guide you through the passport photo process and tell you exactly how to submit your digital photos.

What happens if I don’t have the correct supporting documentation: how can I obtain them?

Send us a message here for more information on how to obtain an official government replacement copy.

Please note that all supporting documents MUST be originals and that photocopies will not be accepted.

What is a countersignatory?

A counter signatory is the person who verifies the identity of the applicant for all:

first-time applications or passports expired a very long time ago;

the replacement of a lost, stolen or damaged passport;

renewal of a passport for a child aged 11 or under;

or the renewal of a passport if your appearance has changed and you are unrecognisable from your existing passport.

I need a countersignatory but I don’t know any British citizens in my area- what should I do?

If you are applying from outside of the UK, your countersignatory does not need to be British but must have either a current British, Irish or other EU, US or Commonwealth passport. Your application will, however, be processed faster if they own either a British or Irish passport.

What are the criteria for countersignatories?

There are very specific and strict rules for who can be a counter signatory. These rules change from time to time. Due to this, your dedicated MyBritishPassport consultant will advise you at the time of your application about exactly who qualifies as a counter signatory (depending on the specifics of your application) and what they will need to do in order to confirm your identity.

Are my children eligible for UK passports?

Yes, if one or both parents were born inside the UK and the child was born outside the UK then your children can apply for British passports.

In some instances, the child’s birth will need to be registered with the British authorities before applying for a British passport depending on the birth dates of your children.

How do I know if I am eligible for a British passport?

It all depends on the given circumstances, as well as the dates and places of your parents’ birth. If one or both of your parents were born inside of the UK and the child was born outside of the UK, then the children can apply for British passports.

In some instances, the applicant’s birth needs to be registered with the British authorities before applying for a British passport depending on the birth dates of the applicant/s.

What are the criteria for British passport photos?

All photos need to be submitted electronically as printed photos are no longer used and accepted. MyBritishPassport will guide you through the entire process and instruct you on exactly how to submit your digital photos.

Please note that applications that have been submitted without being checked are often delayed or rejected due to incorrect photos, supporting documents and incorrectly completed forms.

How can I provide proof of residence?

Applicants from some countries will need to supply proof of residence. If you are one of those applicants, your MyBritishPassport consultant will guide you through the steps and tell you what to do. They will then check your proof of residence thoroughly to ensure there are no discrepancies between that and your application.

Must I send in my old UK passport when I’m renewing my passport?

An old/expired British passport must be sent to the passport office in the UK to be cancelled before a new passport will be issued. Read more about sending in your old passport here.

The following applies if you have another passport from another country (non-British passport): A photocopy of the entire passport, all the pages, must be sent to the passport office in the UK.

“His Majesty’s Passport Office operates a one-name policy for all official purposes. Where a passport, travel or ID document issued by another country is in a different name than the name used on a British passport, a passport will not be issued until the names are aligned. According to British Government laws, this is for public protection and prevents the potential fraudulent and criminal use of passports in two identities. Therefore, if names on a non-British passport differ from a birth certificate and/or a British passport, then the applicant needs to renew or amend any non-British passport in the name as per the birth certificate before a British passport can be issued.”

How safe is it to send in my old passport plus my forms and documentation?

Rest assured that your security is a top priority. All original documents will be shipped back directly to you, the applicant,  from HM Passport Office via secure courier delivery. Your new passport will be sent to you in a separate package to your old passport and supporting documents.

Must my documents be certified?

MyBritishPassport will advise you depending on the particular situation. Only original documents will be accepted. If you are missing these, MyBritishPassport will assist with more information on how to get an official replacement copy. Please note that we do not source these documents on your behalf.

If your documents are not in English or Welsh, you will need to send through a certified translation together with the original document/s. Your MyBritishPassport consultant will give all the necessary information regarding the translation process, as HMPO are very strict.

What do I do after making payment?

You will receive an email confirming that your payment was received and has been allocated to your file. Your application will be finalised and you will receive an instructional email from your consultant detailing the next step.

How do I communicate with MyBritishPassport?

MyBritishPassport encourages email interaction rather than telephone communication, as this allows for a written record of your transaction/s history, for your convenience and security.

All contact with our clients is usually conducted via email. If you are at all worried about privacy, please note that all of our emails are sent and received via a secure server.

Should you need to speak to your consultant, you can request a call back and they will call you.

What is the next step after my application has been submitted?

If you do not pay immediately then you will receive an email with payment instructions. Please look out for the email and check your Spam/Junk mail folder if necessary.

Your application will be finalised with HM Passport Office. Once this has been done, you will receive an email advising you of the next step to follow.

A copy of the completed application form will be emailed to you, check your application form and make sure all the given information is correct.

Please note that all information provided is strictly confidential and all personal information gets destroyed once a transaction is completed.

What’s the best way to send my documents to the UK?

MyBritishPassport’s registered international couriers will securely ship all documents directly from your address to the passport office in the United Kingdom.

Shipment bookings are made, and paid for, on your behalf by MyBritishPassport. We make sure to only use reliable courier services due to the sensitive documentation and information being shipped; the package in transit will be tracked and written proof of delivery will be provided.

How will I receive my new passport?

New passports and supporting documents will be shipped directly from HM Passport Office to you (the applicant), by secure delivery.

Two separate deliveries will be sent to the address given on your application form, one with your new passport and the other with your original documents (and old passport, if applicable). Occasionally the supporting documents may arrive before your new passport, so just bear this in mind.

Will I be notified when my new passport has been sent?

Yes, you will receive a notification from the courier via either email or text message. You will receive two messages – one for the new passport and one for the old passport and/ or supporting documents. Please note that the parcels will have different waybill shipping numbers.
