With over 200,000 UK citizens living in South Africa, the country has for many years been a popular destination for Brits.
South Africa offers UK citizens plenty of sunshine, friendly communities and a wonderful, outdoor lifestyle and it is no surprise that it is a popular retirement location.
If you are one of these British citizens living in South Africa, you are no doubt very happy in your new country of residence and wouldn’t swap it for the world.
So, what does one do when it comes to renewing one’s British passport from South Africa?
This article will explain all you need to know about renewing your British passport online from South Africa and answers some common questions.
Can I renew my British passport in South Africa?
Yes, luckily it is not too difficult to renew your British passport from South Africa. Simply visit https://mybritishpassport.com/renew-british-passport-online-south-africa-form/ to get started with your easy online application.
You will need to complete the online application forms, have digital passport photos taken and then arrange to have your current/old passport sent in to the passport office in the UK.
MyBritishPassport doesn’t recommend using the South African postal service for this as they have sadly become quite unreliable in recent years.
Instead, we advise our clients to make use of a good courier service and to request tracking on your package as well. This gives you peace of mind and you will be able to check when your passport has arrived at Her Majesty’s Passport Office.
Here at MyBritishPassport, we send our clients’ passports (and any other relevant, original documentation) to the passport office using a reliable courier service.
Once your new passport has been processed by the passport office it will be sent to you via DHL. Your old passport will also be sent back to you (although the corners will have been cut off to render it unusable) in a separate courier.
Can I renew my British passport online?
Unlike in the UK, where people have the option of completing either a physical passport application form (easily obtainable from any post office) or an online form, in South Africa, UK nationals are obliged to complete their applications online only.
This actually makes things more convenient as the online passport renewal forms are very user-friendly and, if you make a mistake, you can simply delete the error and continue. Click here to start your online renewal today.
Bear in mind that any error on your passport application can result in your entire application being rejected. The same can be said about your passport photos: if they do not comply with Her Majesty’s Passport Office’s requirements, this could be a problem.
To streamline your British passport renewal process from South Africa and to ensure that your application is correct, MyBritishPassport would be delighted to assist you.
We thoroughly verify your online application forms and make sure that your passport photos are correct. We also arrange for your old/current passport to be sent to the passport office with our own, preferred courier service.
In addition, we are always available for any questions or concerns you may have around any aspect of the process.

What happens if your British passport expires?
It is not recommended to let your British passport expire, especially if you have had previous passports expire.
If you do this continuously and have also lost your passport or had it damaged, you run the risk of receiving a warning from Her Majesty’s Passport Office.
If your passport has expired, don’t panic! You can apply for a new one by completing the online passport renewal forms, submitting passport photos and sending in your old passport.
Here at MyBritishPassport, we always advise our clients to begin the passport renewal process at least 6 months before the expiry date.
This gives you enough time to complete your passport forms, send your old passport in and submit your application.
Should you need to travel in a hurry or in an emergency situation, if you have less than 6 months of validity left on your passport, the airline might refuse you for travel. In addition, when you arrive at your destination, you may be denied entry due to the short validity.
If you need to travel urgently and your passport has expired, you could apply for a new one via the fast track option, or apply for an emergency travel document, should you need to travel in the next few days.
Emergency travel documents can be obtained from the local British Embassy, Consulate or High Commission in your nearest city.
